Winter Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand: Where the Gods Go After the Temples Close

Every year, as winter approaches the higher Himalayas, the doors of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri close for the season. For many pilgrims, this marks the end of a long-awaited journey. But in Uttarakhand, the end of the pilgrimage season does not mean that worship comes to an end.

The deities associated with these four sacred shrines are worshipped at their designated winter seats in lower-altitude settlements. Lord Kedarnath is worshipped at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, the winter arrangements associated with Badrinath include Pandukeshwar and Joshimath, Goddess Ganga is worshipped at Mukhba, and Goddess Yamuna at Kharsali. These traditions form the basis of what is now promoted as the Winter Char Dham Yatra.

There are some places in the Himalayas that don’t demand your attention with towering peaks or adventure. Instead, they quietly draw you in with the sound of temple bells, the fragrance of incense, and an atmosphere that feels untouched by time. Baijnath Temple, nestled in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, is one such place.

My visit happened just before the beginning of the holy month of Shravan, when preparations for the annual festivities had already begun. The roads leading to the temple were lined with stalls selling fresh marigold garlands, bel leaves, rudraksha malas, brass bells, and small clay diyas. Pilgrims from nearby villages had already started arriving, and every conversation seemed to revolve around Lord Shiva and the upcoming Sawan Mondays.

The temple attracts local devotees throughout the year and is also visited by pilgrims travelling towards Kedarnath and Badrinath who wish to include another sacred stop on their journey.
