Tungnath Mahadev Temple, Chopta – Complete Travel & Trek Guide (Ground Experience)
Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Tungnath Mahadev Temple is one of the most beautiful and spiritually powerful temples in India. Located near Chopta, this sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is known as the highest Shiva temple in the world, standing at an altitude of around 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level.
Every year thousands of devotees, trekkers, and nature lovers visit this place in Uttarakhand to experience both spirituality and Himalayan adventure. My visit to Tungnath from Chopta was truly unforgettable — a journey filled with breathtaking mountain views, peaceful forests, and divine vibes.
About Tungnath Mahadev Temple
Tungnath Temple is one of the sacred temples in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage in Uttarakhand. According to Hindu mythology, these temples are connected to the story of the Pandavas after the Mahabharata war.
It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in different forms at five places in the Garhwal Himalayas. At Tungnath, the arms of Lord Shiva are said to have appeared, making this temple extremely sacred for devotees.
The temple architecture is simple yet ancient, built with stone and surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks. The peaceful environment and ringing temple bells create a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Trek from Chopta to Tungnath – My Experience
The journey to Tungnath begins from Chopta, often called the Mini Switzerland of India. https://maps.app.goo.gl/WwamjAJNNAtjack4A
The trek distance is about 3.5 km one way, and it usually takes 2–3 hours to reach the temple depending on your pace.
The trekking path is well paved with stone steps, making it suitable even for beginners.
What you will see during the trek
-
- Dense forests of oak and rhododendron
-
- Beautiful alpine meadows (bugyals)
-
- Himalayan birds like the Monal
-
- Stunning views of peaks like Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath
The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings make this trek one of the most scenic short treks in Uttarakhand.
During my trek, every turn of the trail revealed a new breathtaking view of the Himalayas.
Chandrashila Summit – The Highlight of the Trek
About 1–1.5 km above Tungnath Temple lies the famous Chandrashila Peak.
This short but steep climb takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. From the summit you can witness 360-degree panoramic views of some of the tallest Himalayan peaks.
Many travelers start their trek early morning to watch the sunrise from Chandrashila, which is one of the most magical experiences in the Himalayas.
Temple Timings
The temple opens only for six months each year due to heavy snowfall.
Opening season: April / May
Closing season: October / November
During winter, the idol of Lord Tungnath is shifted to Makkumath where worship continues until the temple reopens.
Morning and evening aarti are performed daily when the temple is open.
